The White House Writers Group:
Our History
The White House Writers Group opened its doors in early 1993 …
At the time, the typical Washington public affairs communication firm was composed primarily of former Capitol Hill and federal agency press secretaries. In contrast, WHWG’s original members were former speechwriters in the White Houses of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
They dedicated their firm to the proposition that content is king. This was long before that phrase came into vogue, but it defined WHWG’s approach to communications then and now.
From the first, WHWG’s goal was to lay out each client’s case in a well-researched, well-developed, arresting and compelling way – whether in:
an op-ed in a local, national or global newspaper or on a website,
a 30-second national television spot,
a memorable phrase that made national news and defined an issue,
a long-form radio interview,
a documentary film,
an internationally viewed webinar,
a live international conference drawing national and global media coverage,
summations at the end of trials,
a post on a highly specialized blog,
message preparation and rehearsal for a CEO about to be interviewed,
even a speech –
and online and other promotion to insure that our clients’ messages reached precisely the audiences each needed to inform and persuade.
We stood out from the first. Sometime in our first year word got back to us that the opinion editor of a major global newspaper had said she could always tell one of our submissions, because the quality of the writing was so superior to everything else that crossed her desk.
Among our early clients were:
one of the nation’s largest agricultural companies under fire from activists with huge resources, enormous media sophistication and militantly anti-modern-agriculture views;
a coalition of general counsels of the major American auto manufacturers and insurers seeking relief from abuse of the civil justice system;
one of the world’s most respected academic think tanks;
investment banking houses seeking to identify themselves with issues and trends in the marketplace;
a prominent media CEO whose speeches were instrumental in establishing his vision for his company and industry with the financial markets.
Our clients have ranged from the icons of high technology to consumer products to transportation to governments to national defense and much more.
We have been communications consultants in numerous regulatory disputes, nearly twenty Supreme Court appeals, and class action litigations – and we have reached eyes and ears on every continent except Antarctica.
Over three decades we have maintained our focus on producing and effectively distributing excellent, rigorous, persuasive content on behalf of clients we honor and respect.
